SRM Varsity to introduce Dept of Oncology in Medicine and Health Sciences program

Chennai: The SRM University would soon introduce a program on "Department of Oncology" in Medicine and Health Sciences''. This was announced by University Founder-Chancellor during the two-day education and awareness program organised to mark the National Cancer Awareness Day, which concluded today at the SRM Medical college and hospital at suburban Kattankulathur.


It was organised by the Department of Pathology of SRM Medical College Hospital Research Centre. This included a scientific (CME) program in Cancer diagnosis and treatment, besides various competitions related to promote cancer awareness with active participation by more than 450 medical and paramedical students.


The event was inaugurated by the SRM University Founder Chancellor T Paarivendhar, who emphasized the increasing burden of cancer on society and its implications on the individuals and families.


He highlighted the increasing role and service of SRM Medical College Hospital and other SRM hospitals in delivering high quality cancer treatment through the team of dedicated and experienced doctors, state-of- the art infrastructure and facilities. He also said the SRM University would soon introduce a course on "Department of Oncology" in Medicine and Health Sciences Program.


Dr N. Chandraprabha, Director of Medical and Health Sciences enumerated the prevalence of the various cancers seen in India and the increasing number of cancer patients treated in SRM Medical College Hospital.


She emphasized the fact "Prevention is better than cure" and the importance of early diagnosis to have the best treatment outcome for the patients. Mr Paarivendhar also distributed awards to the winners of various competitions conducted by the Department of Pathology and winners of the Sri Ramamirutham Rolling Trophy with a cash reward of Rs 18,000 for academic excellence in Pathology.
