Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh asked the state health minister to issue a show- cause notice to Chintpurni Medical College, Pathankot, where “classes are not being conducted regularly”.

The college has been asked by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to stop admissions for two sessions.

Singh also ordered the Department of Medical Education and Research to take all possible steps to secure the future of the students of crisis-hit Gian Sagar and Chintpurni medical colleges.

The instructions were issued during a review meeting here of the departments of Medical Education and Research, and Health and Family Welfare, a government statement said.

Taking note of the ongoing court case regarding Gian Sagar Medical College, Banur, Singh said since the case could take a long time, it was necessary to find ways and means to compensate the students for the loss of time incurred in the process.

He asked the vice chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) to hold a special exam for the Gian Sagar students.

Earlier in the day, the department officials briefed the chief minister on the “pathetic” state of affairs in both these colleges, saying that inspections had indicated violations of several MCI norms.
