Supreme Court says YES to MBBS admissions Koppal institute of Medical Sciences

Karnataka: The Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences(KIMS) has got the Supreme court nod allowing admissions to one hundred and fifty students for Ist year MBBS, during the academic year 2018-19. However, the approval comes subject to full compliance of the Additional Chief Secretary, State government's undertaking to rectify all shortcomings at the institute brought to light by the Medical Council of India.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences was one of the 82 existing medical colleges in the county who had been denied renewal permission by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare based on the recommendations of the Medical Council of India.

In response, the government-run Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS)in order to register its protest against the union government for denial of permission to run the 4

thbatch of MBBS course for the academic year 2018-19, had moved a petition in the Karnataka High Court.

However, relief to the medical college was denied by the court.

Objecting to the decision of the HC, an special leave petition filed by the institute with the apex court. The petition questioned the High Court of Karnataka's interim order declining to intervene with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's May 31 order denying the institute permission, based on the Medical Council of India's( MCI) recommendation.

Granting relief to the state run medical college, a Bench comprising Justice L. Nageswara Rao and Justice S.A Bobde passed the order in favour of the college stating that the apex court had already permitted other government medical colleges in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh for intake of students for the present academic year, after having been given undertakings from the Principal Secretaries of these States assuring rectification of deficiencies within a preset time schedule, reports the Hindu.

Since Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences( KIMS), is a state-run medical college, the apex court has applied the same ruling for it as well.
