The Supreme Court has rejected the Special Leave Petition (SLP) of the Left Front government over admission in MBBS course in the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and upheld the decision of High Court of Tripura to fill up the vacancy from the merit list of state joint entrance. The high court on September 29 had directed the state to fill up the 'revert back' central pool seats from state entrance merit list.

But to accommodate the daughter of Dr Hiranmoy De, a leading figure of a pro-CPM doctors' association, the government preferred the NEET merit list and challenged the order of high court. As per the direction of the apex court, the state government completed the admission of all 12 students.

The Supreme Court on October 6 last in a separate case had directed the states to fill up the vacancies of central pool from merit list of national entrance and eligibility test (NEET).Accordingly, the Tripura government had asked 12 toppers of NEET to join counselling yesterday. The aspirants from different parts of the country have come to attend counselling.

But when the Supreme Court quashed the plea of the state after hearing that after direction from the high court, Directorate of Medical Education completed counselling of the state entrance students. The authorities after getting direction from apex court refused NEET students and made admission of 12 students from state entrance merit list from yesterday, said Principal AGMC Dr K K Kundu. He said the SC, while rejecting the SLP filed by the Tripura government, directed the authority to comply with the order of Tripura High Court.

The HC had earlier ordered the state government for admitting twelve students to AGMC as per results of the state joint entrance examination and the admission process had to be completed by October 4 last.As many as 12 candidates out of 15 central quota candidates at AGMC had not turned up for admission within the stipulated time for the current session. The department has made an attempt to fill up the seats from state joint entrance. But CPI-M backed doctors' association revolt against the decision and demanded to fill up the seat from NEET to accommodate their candidate.
