Ragging at RML Medical College: 2 MBBS students get warning notice; UGC seeks explanation

Lucknow: Days after back to back reports of ragging menace, Uttar Pradesh has come across yet another ragging case, wherein two MBBS students of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences (RMLIMS) have been issued warning notice after few juniors filed a complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the Union Government.


The RML Medical College started the MBBS course in the year 2017 and has admitted the third batch of medical students in 2019.

As per recent media accounts, a few MBBS students belonging to the fresh batch were stopped outside their classroom by two senior students, one from 2017 and the other from 2018 batch. One of the seniors passed indecent remarks. When the juniors objected they hurled abuses at the freshers. Following which they ran to another classroom in order to avoid the unnecessary chaos.


The medical students, afraid of the incident filed an online complaint with the anti-ragging cell of the University Grant Commission (UGC). A nationwide toll-free 24x7 anti-ragging helpline 1800-180-5522 in 12 languages have been established which can be accessed by students in distress owing to ragging related incidents.


The UGC forwarded the complaint to the RML medical college's administration seeking an explanation about the alleged ragging incident. Thereafter, the medical college initiated a probe in the matter.

Talking to HT, the institute's spokesperson Vikram Singh stated that the senior students involved in the act were given a warning. They have been given an ultimatum stating that a second complaint against them will call for strict action and even suspension for six months.


The two MBBS students have been issued warning notices and their parents have been apprised too about the incident and the warning letter.


Prior to the beginning of the current academic session on August 16, the Dean of the medical college Dr A K Tripathi reportedly addressed the medicos and assured the candidates of safety and security inside the medical college campus, reports Amar Ujala.
