Renewal permission for Doon Medical College sought

Dehradun: The Letter of Permission (LOP), awarded to the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) for admission of one hundred and fifty students in its first batch has been sent to the Medical Council of India, by the Medical Education Department of Uttarakhand.


The college was started this year and the permission pertains to admissions for this year only. Dr. Ashutosh Sayana confirmed that the 'First renewal of Permission had been dispatched to the MCI.


The MCI in its turn will visit the college hospital and carry out an investigation to ascertain whether the infrastructural and faculty requirements are to satisfaction and based on its final report, permission would be granted.


According to information, the Government Doon Medical College has attached a list of facilities being made available with the letter asking for renewal of permission. The MCI in turn based on its inspection report will send a letter recommending modifications, changes and additions, if required. The inspection visit by the MCI is scheduled for September. By this time the college would already have a batch of 150 students ready to start their 1st year of MBBS.


The LOP provided to the Doon Medical college by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India was given with the promise that the college would continue to upgrade its facilities and invite the MCI team for renewal of permission- for the next four years. It was understood that the college hospital would have to continuously keep upgrading for these renewals. One example being-raising its bed strength from 300 to 750.


The pending MCI tour also implies urgent action being taken on the decision to construct a multi speciality associated hospital for the medical college.


According to Surendra Singh Negi, the State Health Minister, the associated hospital would be developed on 150 big has of land, positioned adjacent to the academic and administrative block of the medical college.
