Relief: MBBS admission approval on 400 seats granted by MCI in UP

Relief to new medical colleges at Banda, Saharanpur, Jalaun and Azamgarh

Uttar Pradesh: Tables have turned for the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh which has been granted permission to admit students on 400 MBBS seats in 4 of its upgraded district hospitals by the Medical Council of India (MCI), for the current academic session for the year 2018-19.

The Council permission comes 4 days ahead of the NEET Counselling as a major relief for a government writhing under the loss of 3,300 seats out of the total 23600 denied admissions all over the country. NEET counselling for MBBS courses in private medical colleges in UP commences from June 19. The MCI in pursuance of its admission approval has given a directive to the state to furnish a fresh undertaking by June 18. This is to be done to fulfill all mandatory requirements for the academic session beginning mid-July for MBBS courses in these four medical colleges

Recently medical dialogues had reported that 10 New Medical Colleges in the state have been denied permission of establishment costing the state a total of 1150 seats, while the Ministry has closed the admissions doors on 16 existing Medical Colleges. With 2,150 MBBS seats in the state having been disapproved by the Medical Council of India(MCI) in these existing medical colleges, the UP government has sought a review of the same by the center.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in the state, 10 new medical colleges will not be able to takeoff due to infrastructural and faculty deficiencies. A situation like this has arisen when state hospitals and medical colleges were witnessing professional and trained manpower paucity.

Among those whose fate were sealed by the council, the apex education regulator had denied permission to the state government on 400 seats for initiation of MBBS courses. The denial stood for district hospitals in Saharanpur, Jalaun Banda, and Azamgarh. The reason for council disapproval was infrastructural deficiencies, shortage of faculty/nursing staff, lack of CT Scan machines and other medical equipment declared mandatory for MBBS studies as per Council norms.

However, now a 400 MBBS seats admission permission granted by the Council to 4 of the state's upgraded district hospitals at Jalaun, Banda, Saharanpur, Azamgarh, along with the directive of an undertaking by June 18 is likely to act as effective relief for Uttar Pradesh, reports DNA.

"We will submit the fresh undertaking by June 18. We have almost fulfilled all requirements in the four medical colleges and those left will be met before the MBBS course begins," , Dr KK Gupta, Director General Medical Education confirmed to the daily
