Hyderabad: The Medical Council of India's(MCI), decision to refrain from granting recognition to 2 Medical Colleges in Hyderabad has led to MBBS students speculating about their medical careers.

Students of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Adilabad will not be able to appear for the final year MBBS exams or get their licenses as the colleges have not been able to meet the council compliances.

This comes after the Medical Council Of India found severe deficiencies in the medical colleges. As per MCI report, RIMS had a faculty deficiency of 35.84% as well as resident doctor deficiency of more than 85%. The council angrily also noted that "Dean is not regularly attending as Dean as verified from various persons working in the institute. She was not there in college till 3 pm on 5.6.2018. It was reported that she has gone to attend a meeting at DMER office at Hyderabad whereas DMER himself was present in the college at about 12 noon. The fact of her not being a regularly attending Dean is further fortified by the fact that majority of the declaration forms has not been signed by the Dean. Since she reported at 3 pm she was also not considered as faculty of Biochemistry. She has not submitted her declaration form as Dean." Other infrastructural shortcomings were also pointed out by the council with the decision of not giving recognition to the medical college. The council has given the college one month time to correct its deficiencies

The perturbed students who will lose a year have approached the Telangana Junior Doctors Association to complain that despite the MCI inspection having been done recognition was still to come reported the Deccan Chronicle.

RIIMS Adilabad commenced functions in 2008, Five batches have completed their MBBS course from RIMS and it presently has 143 professor vacancies and 45 vacant assistant professor posts vacant.

In a bid to step up its hiring, the medical college will now offering attractive pay packages to teaching staff that will be recruited in next three weeks to overcome faculty shortages and meet Council compliance.

A 100 % salary hike has been agreed upon by the Telangana government. Salaries drawn by the faculty at RIMS now would be at par with their counterparts in Osmania or Gandhi medical college.

Hans India reports that RIMS professor appointments will be drawing a consolidated pay package of Rs 1.9 lakh per month; the associate professor will call for Rs 1.5 lakh, and the assistant professor package would amount to Rs 1.25 lakh.

The main reason for the vacant posts lies in the college being situated in far-off Adilabad district, lack of educational opportunity for staff children and fewer facilities in the backward Telangana district. Therefore appointments in the past have been contractual in nature says the Telangana Junior Doctors' Association.

"RIMS being a semi-autonomous institution, posts are being filled on a contract basis unlike in government medical colleges where recruitment is permanent.

"In such a scenario, why would senior teaching faculty sacrifice everything and show interest to come to Adilabad for a job that is temporary and at the mercy of college administration. Also, the pay package was not encouraging," said a junior doctor.

MCI would be carrying out a re-inspection in September after which renewal decision on recognition would be announced, the director told the media.
