Punjab: A recent MCI inspection by three senior doctors seems to have ended on a disappointing note at Gian Sagar Medical College. MCI noted down several shortcomings during the surprise visit.

It is only after the last inspection done in May 2011 that the college hosted the MCI team for its next inspection in 2016 now. The college authorities were expecting the inspection to be done in later half of the year. However, they didn’t seem to be prepared as there were also faculty protests at the college recently.

Some of the issued noted by the MCI inspection team includes faculty below the set standards. Like there are only five teachers in the surgery department against the norm of employing 16. Similarly, medicine has 4 teachers (when the requirement is of 16). Even, paediatrics and gynaecology departments face a staff crunch.

The institute currently offers 100 MBBS seats. The college was set up in 2006 and received clearance from MCI till 2011. However, the current situation has put the college management in a state of worry. If they are denied MCI permission, they will not be able to conduct the next academic session. The unexpected turn of events will also make it a difficult financial situation for the management to handle.

During the site inspection, it was also noted there is a clear deficiency of patients in the 700-bed hospital. There were hardly any patients in OPD or the IPD wards. MCI expects a 60% bed occupancy.

A faculty member said to HT that the long protest by the college staff due to the non-payment of dues that was called off last month only, majorly affected college working. Nearly 20-30% staff left the job and the new faculty had yet not been hired so far.

Media tried to contact college chief executive officer (CEO) Manish Jhakar several times, but to no avail.
