Punjab: MCI inspection team constituting of four members led by Dr Pradeep Garg recently visited the GMC Patiala. MCI is reported to be working on a compliance report, summarizing the shortcomings noted in the college during its earlier visits.

The college has applied to MCI for renewal and retention of 50 MBBS seats which were granted in addition to the 150 seats offered at the college two years back.

After MCI’s visit in November 2014, the matter has been under scrutiny when in 2015; the MCI has gone ahead and recommended that this addition grant (of 50 seats) be cancelled due to the college. There were many shortcomings noted in the college at that time.

More notably, the college reported 37 per cent shortage of senior and junior doctors; lack of infrastructure with a shortage of emergency beds (only 20 instead of the required 30), and in addition, inadequate ventilator facility.

However, the college was able to retain the seats at that time when the MCI team revisited the campus; after having submitted a compliance report noting the shortcomings during its previous visit.

Tribune reported that the MCI team today held a surprise visit to the college and took attendance of the staff. The team members also reviewed the records of various departments and visited various wards to see the facilities being provided to interns and patients.
