Punjab: After noting deficiencies, primarily the faculty shortage in Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (AIMSR) Bathinda, MCI is likely to deny permission to the institute for MBBS admission. The council, at present, will write to the health ministry expressing its dissatisfaction after its committee's observations made during inspection rounds.

MCI sources have implied that an assessment report of the institute was put before the council PG committee. The inspection of the college was done in January. An application was also filed by the medical college seeking MCI permission for an increase in seats in MD Pathology.

MCI had earlier noted deficiencies in its initial inspection of the institute and therefore, rejected the its application to start four new PG courses. The four new courses included MS orthopaedics, MD (radio-diagnosis), MD (anaesthesia) and MS (ENT). After a meeting between the MCI members of the Postgraduate Medical Education (PME) Committee, the decision was finally put up on the MCI website.

Later, the MCI committee also concluded that the college’s faculty is not enough to even handle the UG (MBBS), and therefore, took the decision to stop admission in the college. The prime reason being shortage of faculty including, positions of a professor, three associate professors and two assistant professors.

In addition there were some other issues noted in the assessment report. Proper leave was not given to 3 faculty members. They were marked absent on the inspection day. Also, the council observed that faculty members had less experience to hold such qualified posts in the college.

Now, the council has granted four weeks time for submission of a compliance report on the noted deficiencies. It will be finally granted permission based on the report.

Tribune reported that, “If no compliance is received within this period or compliance/verification is found unsatisfactory, it will result in stoppage of the admission to the postgraduate course against the above-mentioned seats,” the council observed.

When contacted, principal of the college Dr Harkiran Kaur refused to comment saying she had not seen the documents.
