Punjab: MBBS fees likely to drop from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 15 lakh at Private Medical Colleges
Chandigarh: The fee structure for the MBBS course at private medical colleges is likely to drop from Rs 70 lakh to Rs 15 lakh as per a newly proposed amendment in the existing Punjab Private Health Sciences Education Institutions (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fee and Making Reservation) Act.
This amendment would bring substantial power to the state government over the high fees charged by private medical Institutions by regulating their MBBS fee structure.
The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Punjab Government had decided to regulate the fee structure of the private medical colleges. The state government had sought an amendment to the Punjab Private Health Sciences Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fee and Making of Reservation) Act, 2006, to include all those private medical universities that have spread out rapidly over the past one decade. The Act sought to provide for the regulation of admission, fixation of fee, and the making of reservation in private health sciences educational institutions in the state of Punjab and for the matters connected therewith.

The state government had formed a three-member committee to review the fees of those private universities in the state.
The committee consists of Health Minister Brahm Mohindra, Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal and Higher and Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
The cabinet took note of issue relating to the high fee being charged from medical students by private institutions and directed the committee to study the matter in detail, along with other relevant concerns with regard to such institutions, which have cropped up in large numbers across the state in recent years.
This law modification will restrain the MBBS fee to Rs 15 lakh from Rs 50-70 lakh, which the Adesh Medical College, Bathinda, Christian Medical College CMC, Ludhiana, and Sri Guru Ram Das College, Amritsar are currently charging for the current academic session.

In the new proposed amendment, the government would insert the word "private medical universities" so that the Act can be applicable to all private institutes, reports the Tribune. This proposed amendment had received a lot of flak last year.
