Punjab Government sets in motion the Chintpurni Medical College Closure

Punjab: Having worked out the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital closure, the state government on Wednesday gave directions to Swaran Salaria, Chairperson Chintpurni Medical college to respond to its query about why the college’s ‘essentiality certificates’ issued in 2010 should not be withdrawn.


“If no satisfactory response is received, the department of medical education will immediately withdraw all permissions to the college,” read a seven-page notice, reports HT


Mr. Vikas Pratap, Punjab Medical Education, Secretary revealed that the notice was issued due to the college not being able to overcome the gross deficiencies pointed out in the inspections held in November last year,and March this year.


Sources say that the Attorney General, Punjab and the Chief Minister’s office were in the know of developments, before the serving of notice.


With a total strength of 300, the college intake for its two batches admitted until now has been 150- for each batch.


The 150 enrolled in the 2014-15 session are already in the Punjab and Haryana High Court demanding a shift to another medical college. The other batch admitted in 2016-17 happens to be going the same way.


The notice with attached copies of the two inspections held both in the last year and this, state the absence of administrative staff, including the principal at the time of inspection. The list of appointed faculty was also not handed over to the inspectors, the report reveals.

The report also mentions fewer patients being present in the ward, as against the inflated figures mentioned in the register. “Not even a single patient was admitted in IPD ward. Even the emergency ward register had just one post-surgery patient. The laboratories, blood bank and radio diagnosis department wore a deserted look,” the report adds.


The report also talks of no action having been taken too overcome discrepancies despite assurances having been given to the Supreme Court appointed -Lodha Committee, reports the HT.
