Punjab: After MCI, the state government has now declared Pathankot's Chintpurni Medical College as a sick unit. This news comes after four months when MCI reported that the medical college is in a bad shape. Now, the state government has also noted that the teachers and treatment facilities at the college is short.

Another inspection of the medical college was done by the department of medical education and research on July 18. This was following the pressure from parents and the students to move the last batch of the medical college to other state run medical colleges.

MD team had earlier reported on the matter that Chintapurni Medical College has not been able to establish itself as a running medical education institution due to the complete breakdown of academic processes. These primarily being appointments of teaching faculty. The constant moving of teachers leading to disruption of classes. The other major setback being the inability on the part of the college to clear MCI inspections. So grave is the situation that matters have reached the High Court and its verdict will decide the students fate, who are seeking transfer to other colleges in order to continue uninterrupted study.

The high court is to resume the hearing on the contempt petition. The students petition has put the blame on the medical education department, alleging violation of beginning the transfer process of last batch of students from June 7.

During the last inspection by the medical education department, it has been duly noted that the college wards, outpatient department (OPD), blood bank, and labour room were all empty.

"The lone patient was in the casualty ward," a senior member of the faculty of Government Medical College, Amritsar, wrote in the report, as accessed by HT. "Except the deputy medical superintendent, there was no teacher around. Even the principal was absent. The Pathankot college didn't show the teacher-attendance register to the auditor."
