Punjab: A media report confirms the news when the Medical Education and Research Minister Anil Joshi laid the foundation stone of Rs 104 crore project at the Government Medical College (GMC) in the city.

The medical college project will include construction of 4 hostel buildings. The total capacity of the hostel-to-be will be to accommodate 700 students. In addition, a laboratory, classrooms, spots and administration segment will also be a part of the collocated budget. A multi-level parking lot is also a part of the project plan.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshi in his statement implied that college will also offer 50 more MBBS seats. In comparison to private medical colleges in the state, the GMC will have a better infrastructure. The state government also wants to ensure that best facilities are given to the patients at state government colleges, so that they are not required to approach private hospitals. Government hospitals charge a nominal fee and provide medicines free of cost.

“Even after a charging nominal fee from patients and giving them most medicines free of cost, if patients still go to private hospitals, it indicates that employees are not doing their duties diligently,” he said to Tribune.

He said reports of exploitation of patients by employees had been highlighted frequently. He warned doctors against indulging in malpractices and asked senior authorities of the college and officials of the Medical Education Department to look into the matter.

Secretary medical education and research Hussan Lal, Government Medical College Principal, Dr BS Bal, medical superintendent, Dr Ram Sarup Sharma, and other officials were also present on the occasion.
