With the fresh order by the Supreme Court regarding the counselling by private medical colleges, the DMER, Punjab, on Saturday, put a hold on the counselling processes of further counselling to fill MBBS and BDS seats in all its nine medical colleges and 14 dental colleges.

On 23rd September, the apex court in the case of Madhya Pradesh cancelled the counselling conducted so far by private medical colleges for admissions in undergraduate medical course and ordered that a combined counselling be held afresh.

The government of Punjab, following the order, decided to put a temporary halt to its counselling process, to understand the implications that the judgement would have on the state

”We have stopped counselling in all medical and dental colleges in the state for the time being. We have sent the file to the office of Advocate General, Punjab, for legal opinion in view of the Supreme Court order and its implication on Punjab,” said Manjit Kaur Mohi, Director, DMER told Tribune.

It is added that only last month, the state government allowed three private medical colleges in the state to conduct their independent counselling. These included Adesh Medical University (Bhatinda) and Christian Medical College (Ludhiana). The SGPC-run Sri Guru Ravi Das Institute of Medical Sciences in Amritsar, too, was allowed to fill 50% of management quota seats on its own reports HT.

With the recent SC verdict, the government immediately sent directions to these three private institutes against holding any fresh admissions till further orders.

About 90% seats (MBBS and BDS) are been filled at these institutes and classes were already on. Only seven seats remain to be filled at Ludhiana’s Christian Medical College for which second counselling was scheduled for September 26, stands cancelled now.

It is still be to seen whether the state government is now going to cancel the already filled seats by these three institutes
