Kasaragod: Civil Society bodies and elected representatives have been requested by the Central University of Kerala(CUK), to join the delegation that it plans to take to New Delhi to facilitate the setting up of a postgraduate medical college, with emphasis on district research activities.

G. Gopakumar, CUK, Vice Chancellor who had initiated the idea of taking a delegation to New Delhi in 2015, is the brain behind setting up of a state of the art medical college to impart postgraduate medical education with a focus on research. The college would provide medical treatment to patients similar to what is offered in any other institution; however, it would not run any UG courses like MBBS and BDS revealed Gopakumar to the Hindu.

The institute containing facilities similar to other medical colleges would be a full-fledged institution. The institute would run an advanced Epidemiology Department that would survey causes leading to health and disease conditions in defined populations.

The idea would take a while to take off as only a few political party leaders and civil society bodies had expressed willingness has shown interest in joining the campaign launched to push it with the center said Gopakumar.

More resourceful persons needed to join the initiative to convince the Centre and exert pressure to set up such an institute here, he said.

Despite Kasaragod population suffering from traumatic and undiagnosed diseases, a medical college in the vicinity is yet to come up in the district.

Local people go to hospitals in Mangaluru for expert medical care. The proposed Badiadhukka government medical college hospital (MCH) has yet to see work begin on it due to fund crunch.

The previous UDF government had launched the project four years ago.
