Chennai: Sri Ramachandra Medical College And Research Institute have been given directions by the State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission to pay back the US $ 18000 (approximately equivalent to Rs 11,72,638) to NRI student, Parasaran Rangarajan. Rangarajan has discontinued his course due to ill health. A fine of Rs. 10,000 has also been imposed on the deemed university.

Parasaran Rangarajan, an NRI, according to sources, who was admitted to the MBBS course in the university under the NRI Quota in 2009, paid the US $ 1,43,000 (equivalent to Rs 93,15,960) in 3 installments to the University.

The university though fixed the fee only at the US $ 1,25,000 (approximately equivalent to Rs 81,43,322.) Therefore, Rangarajan chose to withdraw the excess payment of US $ 18,000 by asking the university for retrieval of the amount.

Having pursued only 1 year of study at the university, despite having paid fees for five and half years alongside, hostel fee, he again sought to seek withdrawal of US $18,000 from the management. This decision was taken due to him being indisposed, and therefore, unable to pursue medical education for the remaining years.

With the trial having ended the bench comprising of Justice K. Baskaran and Justice Dr S. Tamilvanan has given directions to the university to return the US $ 18,000 to this NRI student, reported Deccan Chronicle
