Patliputra Medical College reviewed by MCI inspectors for compliance

Dhanbad: Patliputra Medical College and Hospital were visited by a 3 member Medical Council of India (MCI), team last week to review compliance of manpower and infrastructure by the college for the restoration of 50 MBBS, seats cancelled last year.


The team that visited the college for inspection on a two-day tour comprised of Sobhan Das, Head forensic medicine, RG Kar Medical College, Calcutta, Narendra Nath Mukhopadhyay head surgery, Burdwan Medical College, Bengal, and B.C. Dutta (head of anatomy, Silchar Medical College, Assam


The three inspectors divided the survey into three parts with Mukhopadhyay doing the rounds of gynaecology, orthopaedics, dental, surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, and dermatology; Dutta touring the medicine and forensic science departments and Das scrutinizing infrastructure at the rural health training centre of the hospital in Govindpur, 5km from the main building in Saraidhela.


The three inspectors also met the principal Patliputra Medical College, Kameshwar Bishwas, and various departmental heads to discuss the real situation on manpower.


"Infrastructure has improved. Professor and associate professor vacancies have been filled up through promotions in May. We are optimistic," Bishwas told the Telegraph. He further reassured that steps were being taken to fill up the remaining 24 percent vacancies through fresh appointments of junior residents, senior residents, and assistant professors.


Patliputra Medical College's MBBS seats had been increased from 50 to a 100 in 2013, only to be done away with in 2017, for noncompliance of council norms.
