Dhanbad: The Medical Council of India’s(MCI), February 6 inspection pointing at senior faculty shortage at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for granting permission for continuation of its 50 MBBS seats, has led the management to keep its compliance report pending. The reason being the PMCH authorities are awaiting promotions of its faculty members to take place, before submission of compliance.

The last date for submission of compliance was April 21, Saturday.

The February 6 inspection, had resulted in the MCI pointing out shortcomings in the college’s infrastructure and senior faculty. To overcome pointed at faculty shortages the PMCH has sent the state health department a list of faculty members eligible for promotion to associate professor and professor levels.

Principal, PMCH, Kameshwar Bishwas told Telegraph as the "major objection of MCI" was with regard to the vacancies of teachers, the college was confident of overcoming the hurdle, as it expected the health department to promote college faculty, thereby easing the problem of senior teacher shortages.

"Promotion is crucial to minimize the huge scarcity of senior teachers, including professors and associate professors. PMCH at present is facing around 43.9 percent shortage of professors and associate professors," he told the daily . "We have to mention steps taken up by us to fill up teacher vacancies in our compliance report."

A source in the college also pointed at salary discrepancies across state-run hospitals, speaking of them not being at par.

"For instance, junior doctors in PMCH get around Rs 43,000 a month and at RIMS in Ranchi Rs 60,000 per month. This explains the lack of interest in PMCH among many doctors," he added to the Telegraph.
