Oversight Committee gives Nod to Baripada Medical College, can enrol students now

Bhubaneswar: A medical college in Baripada in Mayurbhanj district can now enrol students from this academic session with the Supreme Court mandated Oversight Committee according its approval, a week after Odisha Government sought its intervention.


"The process of admission of students for 100 MBBS seats for the 2017-18 academic session in Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College & Hospital can now be taken up as the Supreme Court mandated committed has given its nod," state Health Minister Pratap Jena said.


Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, "The long standing demand of the people of Mayurbhanj district has been fulfilled."


The oversight committees green signal came a week after the state government sought its intervention following failure to get Letter of Permission (LoP) from the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start the Medical College and Hospital in 2017-18 academic session.


Official sources said that the committee has noted that various requirements like infrastructure, equipment, furniture and faculty were understood to be in conformity with the requirements of LoP.


The committee also noted that the college in the tribal dominated district was considered essential for health and socio-economic development of the area, the sources said.
