Indore: Hopeful, that the Medical council of India Inspection is going to reveal fruitful results for its MBBS seat enhancement, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGM Medical College) has once again applied to the MCI for an MBBS seat increase. This will be the 6th attempt made by the medical college for MBBS seat increase which currently stands at 140 seats.

Earlier the medical college administration had applied for increasing its MBBS seats from 140 to 250 for the academic year 2019-20. However, MCI has directed that first, it will conduct an inspection for 150 seats. Once college gets permission for 150 seats, the college will have to apply for 250 MBBS seats.

TOI reports that in the past five years, the college has spent around Rs 15 lakh as application fee for inspection is Rs 3 lakh. However, not losing hope the MGM dean, Jyoti Bindal states that the college is complying with MCI directions and the council will conduct an inspection for 150 seats next week. This would be the sixth time the inspection team would arrive at the college.

Prior to this, in the year 2014, the college had applied to MCI for increasing their MBBS seats to 150 from 140. In this regard, the MCI had conducted an inspection in the college four times. Unfortunately, each time the council found some deficiencies in the standards and rejected the application.

One of the main reasons of MCI rejection was a small library, and the MCI while rejecting the application advised the college to construct a bigger library.

“The MCI had earlier rejected permission due to a small library in college. We have a footfall of 300 students a month and 100 students a day. MCI has directed us to construct a bigger library for which construction is going on behind college building,” Physiology department professor Dr Manohar Bhandari told TOI.

“We had applied for more seats. However, MCI will first give permission for 150 seats and later for 250. We are following MCI directions. It will conduct an inspection for 150 seats for the sixth time next week,” MGM dean Dr Jyoti Bindal told the TOI.
