Cuttack: A Medical Council of India's (MCI) four member team revisited the government run SCB Medical College and Hospital for an inspection on Tuesday. The team was there to review the healthcare facilities and infrastructure of the medical college.

The MCI had on its last visit, in September, taken a severe stand by announcing withdrawal of the 100 seats, which had been added to the already existing number in 2013. It had decided upon this due to the insufficient infrastructural facilities in the college. It had also commented adversely about the premier medical college of the state, putting the authorities in a state of alert.

The state government and college authorities had then immediately swung into action, by taking correctional measures regarding the shortcomings pointed out by the MCI, and sent a compliance report to the body in January .

The visiting MCI team, has checked the compliance measures stated in the report sent, during its latest inspection at the college.

"The MCI team visited SCB campus to verify the contents mentioned in our compliance report. We have rectified problems raised by the MCI," SCB Superintendent, Dr Shyama Kanungo told the TOI.

The MCI inspecting officials visited the various hospital departments and studied equipment & clinical facilities, infrastructure, and staff strength.

The MCI officials also interacted with heads of departments and college authorities and seemed satisfied with the correctional measures taken by the medical institution to retain 100 additional seats.

MCI’s last visit had brought to light shortages of adequate lecture theaters, hostels, examination halls, and library. It had also mentioned the lack of adequate number of casualty officers on campus. Besides that, the apex body had also expressed reservations about the appointed Superintendent’s years of work experience.
