Madurai: Showing no leniency to the candidate who allegedly defrauded authorities via impersonation for acquiring MBBS admission at Theni Medical College without taking NEET; the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court recently denied anticipatory bail to the candidate.

Meanwhile, the candidate and his parents were nabbed by the CB-CID officials from Tirupati. The accused medico's father is reportedly a practicing physician at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital at Chennai.

Medical Dialogues had been reporting about this case wherein medico was booked under IPC Sections 419, 420 and 120 (B) for alleged impersonation in NEET. The matter was forwarded to the Selection Committee of the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the cops on the basis of the complaint filed by the Theni Medical College Dean Dr AK Rajendran.

Thereafter, the medico wrote to withdraw his name from the MBBS course and applied for an anticipatory bail with the Madras High Court. In his petition, the student claimed that "he has no involvement whatsoever with the alleged acts as portrayed in the media." 'I apprehend that I will be a victim of media's exaggerations', he said

With further development in the case, more details about the impersonator had surfaced according to which, on November 2016, the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University refused to register the candidate's name, as he had joined the course without clearing NEET that year. In February 2017, the Medical Council of India (MCI) had also directed the dean of Ponniyah Ramajayam Insititute of Medical Science to discharge the candidate and 35 other students of the college, who had joined the course without NEET qualification.

Taking cognizance of the matter, the government had ordered to verify the medical admission in all medical colleges including government and private colleges under the state medical university.

Now, during the recent hearing on the case, the HC rejected the anticipatory bail petition of the student.

Justice GR Swaminathan, terming the matter as serious, advised the youth to surrender himself before the Crime Branch-CID police on or before September 27th. If he surrenders, then the anticipatory bail petition would be heard as a 'bail petition' by the court, as per UNI.

"The issue (impersonation in NEET) if proved to be true, is a serious one. It is a cause for worry and cannot be taken lightly."

The government counsel made a detailed submission and provided enough materials to show that the issue requires investigation and the case has been transferred to the CB-CID police.

As petitioner's counsel did not respond to the advice of the Judge to the youth to surrender before the CB-CID police, the case was adjourned to October 1 for further hearing.

Furthermore, the medico, along with his parents, has recently been arrested in the case. They were being brought to Theni for interrogation and will be produced before a court on Thursday, certain sources informed UNI.
