NO Attendance, NO Worries: SMS Medical College Medicos Form Their OWN Students Union

Jaipur: A lull that seemed to have appeared at the Sawai Man Singh Medical College (SMS Medical college), during the elections of the student union, has vanished now, since the students contested their own polls and formed their students' union, after being declared ineligible for contesting in the elections.

The Medical Education Minister Kalicharan Saraf has approved this students' union formed by the medicos.

Earlier, Medical Dialogues reported that for the university elections nine candidates had filed nominations for president post, 11 for vice president post, nine for general secretary post, eight for joint secretary post, five for literary secretary, six for cultural secretary, six for games secretary posts and three had filed for girls' representatives.

But, all nominations were canceled after being found ineligible due to attendance shortage.

"No candidate is eligible for election due to a shortage of attendance as per Lyngdoh Committee recommendations," was the statement issued by the election committee.

For the past four years, the undergraduate students have been unable to form their elected students' union. It was the fifth consecutive year when all candidates were declared ineligible for contesting polls.

Subsequently, much to a strange surprise, the students decided to contest their own polls and form their own students' union. On this, Medical Education Minister Saraf informed TOI, "The SMS medical college students came to me and informed that all candidates who filed nominations were held ineligible due to shortage of attendance. If these students have formed the students' union, it should get the approval."

"The students demand their own elected students' union. They do not want college administration forming students' union by nominating students on their academic performances," said Dr Ravi Jakhar, Former-President of Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD) informed.

However, the college administration has not approved the students' union formed by the students on their own, Dr Mukesh Mehla, Former-Secretary of JARD confirmed to TOI.

"For the past four years, there is no elected students' union in SMSMC. In the absence of elected students' union, the cultural programmes, sports activities and other extra-curricular activities are suffering," Dr Mehla added.

The results of students' union polls held across the state will be declared on September 11.
