NEET, NEXT to be applicable to AIIMS, JIPMER, SCTIMST under new NMC Bill

New Delhi: Uniformity is going to take place in medical entrance mechanisms with National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) as well as National Exit Test (NEXT), which soon replace NEET PG being made applicable to all the Institutes with National Importance (INI) including AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER and SCTIMST.

The MBBS admissions via NEET and common counselling conducted by NTA and Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) respectively, are done at all the medical colleges except those institutes who have been accorded national importance status including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry (JIPMER) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram (SCTIMST).

These INI conduct their own entrance tests for candidates seeking medical admission to their institutes. However, as per the recent amendments to the impending NMC Bill -NEET, NEXT and common counselling shall also be applicable to these premier medical institutions in order to have common standards in the country.

Medical Dialogues has recently reported that the NEXT has replaced the NEET PG as the common entrance to PG medical courses across the country.

These major changes in the medical education system are the features of the newly cleared National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill, 2019. The bill is soon going to be introduced in the parliament for approval

Salient Features of the NMC Bill 2019

• The common final year MBBS exam, to be known as the National Exit Test, would serve as licentiate exam, as screening test for foreign medical graduates and for admission to PG medical courses.


• The Commission will also regulate fee and all other charges for 50 percent seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities.


• Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) will conduct an assessment to the medical college and develop a system of ranking of medical colleges which would enable the students to choose the medical college wisely.


• These measures through an autonomous commission will ensure a transparent admission process and also reduce admission fee, as we have long been talking about fee regulation in private colleges.
