Mumbai: Conmen have started to misuse SC/ST Act for acquiring MBBS admissions at medical colleges to forward these seats to parents, who are keen on getting MBBS admissions for their wards.

In a recently reported case, a businessman, who wanted his daughter to get MBBS seat at any of the Mumbai-based reputed medical colleges has allegedly been duped of Rs 4 lakh. On the basis of his complaint, the police have arrested two in the case.

The Indian Express reports that the accused duo allegedly forged a fake caste certificate to manage the MBBS admission through minority quota, to which the complainant didn’t agree to.

In his complaint, father of the medical aspirant, Mr Jatolia, who runs a wholesale business, informed the police that he met the one of the accused, identified as one Alok Sharma, through a mutual friend in June 2017.

He told him that his daughter had cleared her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination and was looking for MBBS admission in any of the reputed medical colleges in Mumbai.

On this, Sharma said to the father that he will help them acquire MBBS admission in return for Rs 40 lakh, to which he agreed. Two months later, the accused introduced the father to another person, who further promised him of MBBS admission in a top medical college in Mumbai. The father paid Rs 7.5 lakh as advance.

Later, the accused called him up to a medical college in Navi Mumbai in October that year, where he was informed that a fake caste certificate was prepared on his daughter’s name because of which she has managed to get MBBS admission through a minority quota in a Navi Mumbai medical college.

The father, however, didn’t agree to this tactic and called off the deal. He then asked for his money back.

According to the police, Sharma had returned only Rs 3.5 lakh but refused to pay more saying that he had used the remaining amount to pay off the others who were involved in the plan.

Thereafter, in May 2018, the father approached the Nehru Nagar police and filed a complaint. After a preliminary investigation, police registered a case under sections of cheating and forgery three months ago. Police arrested Sharma on December 27, reports The Indian Express.

However, the police investigation was stalled because the man who allegedly made the fake certificate died of a heart attack days before the arrest of the accused parties.

The accused, Sharma and 70-year-old Dalsingar Yadav, were produced in court and remanded to police custody till January 10.

Securing MBBS admission via forged caste certificates is a misuse of the SC/ST Act and this tactic by the medicos continues to be a menace in Maharashtra,
