Bhopal: The Medical Council of India's (MCI), surprise inspection of the Gandhi Medical College (GMC), caught the college administration in a flurry, as they were busy with the ongoing counselling process for medical admissions, that gets over today. The team also visited the associated Hamidia Hospital.

"Counselling is bound to be hit when MCI undertakes a roll call," said a senior GMC official.

The pointers made by the MCI during their course of inspection included:

  • Dis functional elevators at Hamidia, leading to patients ailing from respiratory illness like TB, orthopedic problems, neurology and other physical ailments, including AIDS taking the stairs. Hamidia is the largest tertiary care facility in the state capital.

  • Taps at the Gandhi Memorial College running dry. Though the college had asked the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to provide succor, the a day long traffic jam prevented the vehicles from reaching the hospital, while the MCI inspecting team was there

  • Encroachment on one of the gates of GMC and the associated Hamidia Hospital has led to encroachments over the week. Emergency vehicles and others are forced to enter and exit through the entrance at Royal Market, all through the day, leading to the ambulance waiting for 15 minutes before gaining access to the campus and hospital, as well as leaving it.
