MP: Private Medical Colleges hike fee by 25%

MP: If the recent news of mandatory NEET exam was not enough to worry the students, six private medical colleges in the state have resorted to 25% fee hike. The increased fee will apply to MBBS and PG courses offered (including dental) at these institutes.

This is the third state in a row, after Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also decided to take similar measures. The fee structure is subject to revision every three years by ARFC in MP. Yet, this year is witness to the steepest hike in comparison to last three cycles.

An official notification on the proposed hike in PG courses (both medical and dental) is already doing rounds, after having been circulated. The hike in MBBS course fee is likely to be notified soon.

“A hike of around Rs 1.5 lakh is expected in MBBS courses around the state this year while a hike of around Rs 2 lakh annually has already been proposed for PG courses in private medical and dental colleges of the state,” said a senior faculty at one of the medical colleges to HT.

The circular of the Admission and Fee Regulatory Authority (AFRC) implied that the fee for MD and MS course has been increased from Rs 6.75 lakh to Rs 8.55 lakh per annum. This applies to colleges like Index Medical College in Indore. Along with the annual fee hike, there is an additional caution of Rs 25,000. Rs 9.50 lakh per annum is the new fee of Bhopal’s Chirayu Medical College.

In comparison, the new fee structure for dental colleges has been fixed at Rs 4.95 lakh per annum by four colleges.

Dr Sanjay Dixit, vice dean of MGM medical college told HT that, “This is the largest hike so far. If a rough assumption is to be made, one will find a jump of around 100% in the last six seven years.”
