Medical Seat Racket: Prime suspect arrested for duping aspirant Rs 40 lakh

Thiruvananthapuram: A prime suspect, associated with an admission fraud racket, has been arrested by the city police for duping a medical aspirant of Rs 40 lakh and providing false assurance of admission in a Private Medical College.


The police have intensified a probe to catch other culprits related to the racket.

The arrested man, identified as one Shoaib Ali came in contact with the medical aspirant in 2014. He promised the aspirant, a resident of Cherunniyoor in Varkala, that he could obtain a medical seat for him at the Dr Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College in Karakonam. He convinced them to pay Rs 40 lakh to secure the seat for the student.

The student had purportedly transferred the amount in various instalments from October to December 2014. Realising that he had been duped, the student filed a complaint, following which a case had been registered in 2016. However, the accused had managed to flee the country, reports the Hindu.


Two weeks back, the police team issued a lookout notice in his name on the basis of investigation conducted in this regard and obtained the passport detail.


The man was detained by the emigration official at Ahmedabad International Airport. The police officials from Varkala went to Gujarat to arrest. He was taken to the court and is now remanded in judicial custody, reports TOI. The investigation is on to book others who were part of the racket.
