Puducherry: 3 medical colleges have taken a decision to openly defy the Medical Council of India(MCI) directive calling for the discharge of 105 students admitted this academic year.

The MCI had directed cancellation of admissions of 105 students at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, and Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre to after it found the admissions had been done in violation of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 1997.

The Council concluded that the names of 105 students furnished by the colleges did not match with the submitted Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) list to the MCI.

The colleges, however, submitted to the MCI of having followed Council norms “The students will not be discharged. We have sent a reply to the MCI and the Government of Puducherry. The details of the reply sent to the MCI will not be revealed since it is an official communication,” said a senior staff in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to the Hindu.

The apex medical body had issued a direction demanding immediate discharge of 41, 38 and 26 students admitted to Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre and PIMS respectively and compliance as well.

Dhanasekaran, Chairman, and Managing Director, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, and Hospital said despite requests to the government for providing them the list of students for counselling, it did not comply.

“Several seats were vacant even after a third round of counselling. Many students did not come forward to take the seats during the counselling. In that case, as per the Supreme Court directions, the institutes can fill the vacant seats. Only those students who had applied through Centac were admitted,” he said to the Hindu.

The colleges reply to the MCI states, “We are not going to discharge the students as they were admitted as per the procedure. We will wait for communication from the MCI and based on that further course of action will be decided.”

The MCI had found an irregularity in the admission of 161 students.
