Chennai: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has disapproved to grant MBBS recognition to the Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital while noting its shortcomings during its recent assessment. The said decision has apparently left the students in a lurch.

The Executive Committee of the medical council in its meeting dated 03/07/2018 considered the compliance verification assessment report (13th June, 2018) along-with photographs/ videography, previous assessment report (22nd March, 2018 and 20th& 21st December, 2017), and noted a number of deficiencies at the instutute. The institute was clearly 38.6 % deficient in the faculty. A radical shortage of 52.5 % resident doctors was noted at the institute, in conjunction with other infrastructural deficiencies.

More so, the committee noted that the dean of the medical college was not present at the time of the inspection. The report clearly mentions, “Dean Dr N Mohan was not in office when assessors reached the Institute. Vice Dean Dr B Usha was present at the time of faculty the attendance but refused to sign the attendance sheet, stating that “Dean has asked her not to sign any document.” Dean came to office only at 2 pm”

Another deficiency noted by the council stated that the OPD attendance figures submitted by Institute are highly inflated. "On reaching hospital at 09:55 a.m. there was NIL patient for registration. Till 11:30 a.m. registration counters were empty." the officers report added. Many other deficiencies were noted by the council.

In view of the aforesaid deficiency, the Executive Committee decided to recommend to the Central Government to withdraw the notification conditionally recognizing Annapoorna Medical College and Hospital for the award of MBBS degree (150 seats) granted by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai.

The Committee also decided to continue the application of clause 8(3)(1)(c)of Establishment of Medical College Regulation (Amendment), 2010 (Part II).

The Committee further decided that the Institute be asked to submit the compliance for rectification of the above deficiencies within 01 month for further consideration of the matter.
