MCI recommends debarring MBBS admissions at IQ Medical College for 2017-18

Kolkata: The IQ City Medical College, Burdwan having failed to fulfill MCI’s infrastructural norms and is likely to be debarred from admitting candidates in the MBBS course for the academic year 2017-18. A recommendation to this effect has been given to the Union Health Ministry by the apex education regulator. The centre as per Council recommendation may disallow the college from admitting the 150 permitted candidates for its MBBS seats this year.

Medical colleges both government or private need to have the MCI’s yearly sanction for admitting candidates. This year, the IQ City Medical College is to admit its fifth MBBS Batch. Besides the infrastructural deficiencies pointed, the other shortcomings of the college highlighted by the Council include a 15.90% faculty deficiency and a 25.88% resident doctor shortage.

Besides this, patients admitted to the college on the day of inspection for minor complaints did not have their case sheets completed. The bed occupancy number shown on record was different from that in actual. The lacunae noticed by the MCI included : less number of Boys' hostels and visitor room, lack of air conditioned study rooms with computer and internet connections, and no recreation room. The stated shortcomings led to the Council's Executive Committee recommend barring of admissions for the 2017-18 batch to the Central government.

Meanwhile, the ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences and Research has been given 1 month's time by the MCI to fulfill infrastructural shortcomings, pointed by it; or else it shall meet with a similar fate as that of the IQ City Medical College.

The Centre may scrap the admission of candidates to MBBS course for the next two years after the MCI pays a final visit to the college, if norms are not met with. It is believed that the ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences & Research has time and again failed to meet with expectations of the Council, reports millenium post.
