Bengaluru: The Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India (MCI BoG) has given its nod to the change of affiliation of RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to Tamil Nadu based Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute (Deemed to be University).

The consent was given by the MCI BoG at a meeting held in August this year where the authorities considered the inclusion of the Medical College & Hospital under the ambit of the Tamil Nadu Varsity. The request to this effect was made by the Registrar, Dr MGR Medical University last year.

This March, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had issued a notification mentioning that after it obtained the application from the Tamil Nadu varsity, the UGC's Expert Committee consisting of a nominee of MCI scrutinized the application and placed before the Commission. The Commission considered and approved the recommendations of the Committee.
"RajaRajeswari Medical College and Hospital which is located in the city will become a constituent college of Dr MGR institute from the academic year 2019-20."- the UGC notification read.

As RajaRajeswari Medical College is one of the top medical colleges running in the state of Karnataka at present, its shift from RGUHS to MGR Medical University has majorly hit the Karnataka's medical education sector with a fall of 250 seats in the MBBS pool along with more than 100 PG medical seats.

It is mandatory for the information of the concerned medical students, who enrolled in RajaRajeswari Medical College before its inclusion under the ambit Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute that they will receive their degrees from RGUHS. Meanwhile, those medical students, who enrolled at the medical college after its disaffiliation from RGUHS will be awarded degrees by MGR University.
