Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital(GMCH), has stood the MCI’s approval inspection for a post-graduation (MCh) in paediatric surgery course. The apex regulator after having inspected the facility has admitted to having found no deficiency in giving the college permission to launch the course in the near future.

The GMCH, Acting Dean, Dr A Niswade speaking to the TOI said that the final approval by the Council for this course would make it the 2nd MCh course after plastic surgery granted sanction in the college.
"We have already made the provision for the teachers' posts of professor, associate professors and the lecturers. The infrastructural requirements have also been fulfilled," he informed.

The college has been trying to unsuccessfully introduce the course for the past 25 years and has not met with success due to its inability to match up with the teaching faculty and equipment requirements.

The hospital OPD has a child patient footfall of nearly 300 daily. 30-40% of these require surgical inputs, which are presently being looked after by doctors in the general surgery wing.

The college has also provided a special paediatric surgery ward (NO. 8). "We have also set up a play zone in this ward for patients requiring longer stay in the hospital. This is an additional facility that has been added for starting the paediatric surgery super speciality," said Acting Dean, Dr. Niswade.

The Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) attached to GMCH has already got a consent for DM courses in cardiology and gastroenterology.

"Efforts are actually on to gradually start super speciality courses in as many subjects as possible. Paediatric surgery is an extremely super specialized job. By getting separate surgeons for the children a lot of burden from the general surgeons will also be reduced. It will help the surgery department take up more work for general patients," added Dr Niswade.
