MCI NO to Doda Medical College to begin MBBS course

Srinagar: Dissatisfied with the pace of construction and deficiency in the recruitment of the faculty members, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has denied approval for starting MBBS course at a new Government Medical College (GMC) Doda.

The Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the central government had earlier sanctioned five new medical colleges based at Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla a few years back in the state.

The MCI inspection committee had visited these newly built medical colleges. Four medical colleges based at Rajouri, Kathua, Anantnag and Baramulla were given an approval to begin the MBBS course with an intake of 100 seats each while the Doda medical college was denied the approval.

The MCI had inspected the Doda medical college the main campus site in Ghat village and visited the temporary campus at Doda.

The MCI team, during the inspection, was not satisfied with the pace of construction of the main campus and the recruitment of the requisite teaching faculty and other staff required at the Doda medical college, reports the Tribune.

A source informed the daily that "They wanted an assurance from the state government that the construction of the main campus will be completed within a year, but nobody came forward with the commitment."

After getting the MCI disapproval to start the MBBS course at the campus, the authorities have planned to approach the centre to seek 50 MBBS seats.

Dr Tariq Azad, GMC Doda principal told the Tribune, "We are still pursuing our case and have requested the Centre to intervene and allot half of the seats this year so that the college could start functioning. The ball is in government's court as the MCI alone can't amend the rules and allot the seats."
