MCI approves shifting of students of Gian Sagar institute

Chandigarh: The MCI has approved shifting of students of Gian Sagar Institute in Banur, where studies are hit following a strike by employees since February over non payment of their salaries, to different government or private colleges in Punjab, Medical Education Minister Brahm Mohindra said.

The Executive Committee of the Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved the states proposal of the Medical Education and Research department to shift students of Gian Sagar Institute in various streams namely medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy etc. to different government or private colleges, he said in an official release here.

He said that Secretary, Medical Education and Research Vikas Partap has personally taken up the issue with the MCI to secure the future of more than 2,000 students who were studying in the Gian Sagar Institute.

The Minister said the MCI has also set certain guidelines for shifting of students like after taking into account the vacant seats available across various colleges, for particular batch, if need arises there shall be adjustment by having pro-rata number of supernumerary seats for that particular batch in all the available colleges of that particular stream (Medical, Dental, Nursing etc).

Mohindra said the students of Gian Sagar Institute will be shifted strictly on the basis of merit attained by him or her in the qualifying entrance examination for that particular year for admission in various steams medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy etc.

He said reservation policy as mentioned in the Punjab governments notification for a particular batch of admission will be complied with while shifting of the students, and it will strictly be on quota and category wise.

Wherever NRI students were admitted without any entrance examination there the shifting of NRI students will be done by a draw of lots to private colleges only, he said.

However, in case NRI students have been admitted on the basis of an entrance examination then shifting of such students shall be strictly on the basis of merit attained by him or her in the qualifying entrance exam for that particular year.

The students who would be shifted to new colleges under the plan will not be allowed to migrate to other colleges in future under any circumstances, he said.

Gian Sagar Institute, that runs medical, dental, nursing and physiotherapy courses, has been in financial mess as a result classes are suspended.

Faculty and the paramedical staff of the allied hospital remain on strike, since February 1, as wages have not been paid since October last year.
