Puducherry: With the charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal misconduct during the MBBS admission, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against five managing directors and two registrars associated with three private medical colleges and four deemed universities in the Union Territory.

According to a media reports, the CBI has booked the following officials:

  • Managing Director of Mahatma Gandhi medical college and research institute

  • Managing Director of Arupadaiveedu medical college and hospital

  • Managing Director of Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of medical sciences

  • Managing Director of Sri Manakula Vinayagar medical college and hospital

  • Managing Director of Venkateshwaraa medical college and hospital and research centre

The charges were made on the medical institutions for allegedly denying admission to meritorious candidates who had cleared
NEET
examination with a good score under the management quota and instead giving those seats to the low scorers by charging them excessive fees in the academic year 2016-17.

The agency released statements in this regard, in which the CBI stated, 'the institutions not only denied seats for genuine candidates, but also did not adhere to the fee structure prescribed by the fee committee. The institutions did not submit the final list of admitted students neither to the government nor to the Centralized admission committee (Centac) and did not maintain any records on the number of applications received, NEET merit list and the order of counselling', quotes the
TOI
.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had asked the medical institutions to cancel the admissions of 767 students admitted under the said quota. The MCI had further sought replies from the health department.

"But till date no proposal was submitted by the Puducherry health department for giving effect to the cabinet resolution for taking action against the erring private medical colleges. Hence, it is suspected that officials of the health department may have acted in connivance with these institutions in the matter of admissions for MBBS course for the academic year 2016-17, and the admitted students are cheated by these institutions as their admissions were discharged by the MCI", the statement further added.
