Maharashtra: Located at a distance of about 162 km from the Nagpur city, Maharashtra will soon have a new medical college launched by the state govt in Gondia district.

This news also confirms an addition of 100 medical seats in the state- up from the existing 2300 medical seats.

A final nod is however, still awaited from the MCI, which is further reports to have suggested few important changes during its presumed earlier visits. An improvement in the state of infrastructure at the college along with an increase in the number of lecturers has been suggested by MCI. Added points of improvement include increase in x-ray machines, better medical equipment and facilities for patients. MCI is reported to have set a deadline of March 31 for its final inspection.

This development can also be views in context of an important step forward for addressing the prevailing patient: doctor gap in rural areas. By starting a medical college away from the city, it only gets closer to the interiors of the state.

As reported by Express, “We are in the process of complying with the MCI recommendations. After that, there may be another inspection, or the direct approval to start the college may come without a second inspection,” said Dr Pravin Shinghare, Director, Medical Education and Research.

Last year, the MCI had turned down proposal to open six new medical colleges in Maharashtra in Chandrapur, Gondia, Satara, Alibaug, Baramati and Nandurbar, creating a roadblock in the government’s intention to start one medical college in each district.
