Maharashtra: Even though a final inspection report by a three-member MCI team is still pending, the inspectors have stated that they have noted major shortcomings in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC). This is a regard with the medical college’s application for an increase in intake of students from 100 to 150.

There are notable deficiencies, with most prominent being in the equipment and resident doctors (both senior and junior); as highlighted by the MCI team members after their surprise visit to the institute.

Sources in the college told TOI that the total deficiency of residents in IGGMC at present is about 14%, which is much above the permissible limit of 10%. There are just about 95 residents at present.

However, it seems that due to some recent circumstances, the college, which has a high patient footfall, was also noted with less than 60% bed occupancy on the inspection day. The current shortfall points towards the fact the residents were recently on a strike-just two days before the inspection. As a result of which, no elective surgeries took place in departments like ENT, eye and gynaecology, making the patient attendance very small.

For the equipment, the college is reported to have procured the blood component separation unit, but is yet to install the same. In addition, the construction for boy’s hostel has been completed but yet to be furnished-so, it still remains unoccupied.

Only last year, MCI has pointed out 21 deficiencies to the college authorities, which included lack of facilities in the library, specially e-library, lecture halls, CAT scan, blood component separation unit, hostels etc. This year also, it is expected that MCI will ask the authorities to rectify the deficiencies completely.
