Maharashtra: GMCs to have 100 more PG seats
Mumbai:One hundred post graduate seats are being added to Maharashtra’s Government Medical Colleges . This seat augmentation is being done to overcome doctor shortage and improve quality of healthcare in GMCs. The project is meant to be completed by 2018.
11 of the 16 Government Medical Colleges will see an increase in their seat numbers by 10 to 20 % across disciplines, said Director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Dr Pravin Shingare.
According to the Director, (DMER) the Government of India intends to facilitate teaching of more students by professors. "We will have to increase the number of beds for additional students, and more equipment must be brought in for them," he explained. He further added that if seats were to be augmented in Departments of Anaesthesia and Radiology, additional machines would have to be bought.
At present there are 612 degree seats in 12 of the 16 Government Medical Colleges in the state of Maharashtra. This is besides the 156 post-graduate diploma seats being offered in these institutions.
The earlier number of 12,000 PG seats has seen an increase to 20,000 within a span of 10 years. This has been made possible through government grants and campaigns undertaken.
The medical colleges that are to witness this augmentation of seats include those located in Mumbai, Pune, Sholapur, Miraj, two colleges in Nagpur, Yavatmal, Aurangabad, Nanded, Ambejogai and Latur.
The government medical college in Akola, where post-graduate courses were started last year, will also be part of this up gradation. Presently,the institution has four post-graduate seats. The union government will be receiving a proposal for up gradation in this college- later.
The main impact of this up gradation will be felt in the increase of the number of doctors in hospitals, improvement in patient care and reduction of turn around time. It will also cut down on patients waiting for beds and surgeries; not to forget the help it would extend to the meritorious, according to the Director.
