Maha: GMC Miraj gets MCI nod to start 4 MD, MS courses, 10 seats to be added

Maharashtra: Government Medical College, Miraj, Sangli, will in most likelihood begin four new PG medical courses for the academic year 2019-20 as the Medical Council of India PG committee has given its nod for the same.

The Medical Council of India (MCI), Postgraduate committee decided to recommend the Central Government to issue Letter of Permission for the starting of these courses after satisfying that the medical college had enough infrastructure and manpower to provide the said courses .

The courses which have found the MCI PG committee nod include MD (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy), MS (Otorhinolaryngology), MD (Forensic Medicine), MD (Bio Chemistry).

Altogether, 10 medical PG seats will be added to the medical college's kitty through these courses. The committee decided that the college must continue the present recommendation proposed till the first batch appears in the final examination for the course applied.

The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee gave the green signal after the inspection, confirming that the infrastructure and manpower apt for starting these courses.
The Postgraduate Medical Education Committee considered the Council Assessor's Report (6th July 2018) and decided to recommend to the Central Govt. to issue Letter of Permission for Starting "said course(Mentioned in table above)" at Government Medical College, Miraj, Sangli, Maharasthra under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik u/s 10A of the I.M.C. Act, 1956 prospectively i.e. from the academic session 2019-20 restricting the number of admissions to "number of seats" (mentioned in the above table) , till the first batch admitted appears in the final examination of the said course.

The committee advised to the medical college apply for recognition of the qualification at the time of first available examination as per the provision of Section 11(2) of the IMC Act, 1956.

While getting approval for the above courses, the medical college denied permission for starting MD (Emergency Medicine) as number of shortcomings regarding the faculties was noted down and MD (Radio-Diagnosis) as the deficiencies were on the side of the residents the committee came across on the inspection day. The proposal to begin MS (Orthopaedics) was also discarded as the committee found the faculty not inadequate for the beginning of the MS (Orthopaedics) programme. The assessment report specifies many other deficiencies responsible for the non permission to start these courses.
