KIMS Medical College gets MCI nod to restart MD Radiology course

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had withdrawn recognition to the course in the year 2000 citing lack of facilities, equipment and staff at the medical college.

Hubballi: Effort extending upto 18 years has finally borne fruit for Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS); which has now bagged the Medical Council of India's nod for restarting its Post-Graduate (PG) course in Radiology once again.

Confirming the information to TOI, Radiology Head of Department Dr G C Patil said that the Radiology PG course will start from this academic year and it was a result of efforts put in for 18 years.

Certain sources from the medical institute informed the daily about the issues that had led to the de-recognition of the PG Radiology course. They informed that following the decrognition, KIMS purchased a 128-slice CT Scan machine which cost Rs 6 crore and it started functioning in September last year.

Further KIMS also got a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. Apart from this, medical college management also worked to improve facilities such as mammography, X-Ray machines and Doppler machines.

The discontinuation of the course had left the doctors with overwork. "After the course was discontinued, the staffers at the department were under a lot of work pressure. On an average 250 x-ray investigations, 100 ultrasounds, 25 CT scans and 25 MRI scan investigations are conducted here every day. But there were only six members in the department to do so much work," Dr Patil explained.

"With the reintroduction of the course, both patients and KIMS are expected to benefit. The PG radiology students will help doctors at work. Two students will join this year and two more will join in the next year," he gladly added while talking to TOI.

Meanwhile, Dr Ramalingappa Antartani, Director at KIMS expressed happiness on the recognition of the course by the MCI. He said that the institute started an x-ray facility at the emergency department. An ultrasound facility will also be added in some time.
