Thiruvanthapuram: The MCI has given a series of nods and disapproval to various medical colleges of Kerala who have been attempting to start academic terms to increase seat strengths of medical colleges. The first disapproval went the ESI Corporation Medical College, Paripally way and the next denial to the Government Medical College, Idukki for its third MBBS batch (2016-17) . The MCI nods have fallen in the lap of Government Medical College, Idukki 's fourth batch and the third batch at the Government Medical College, Palakkad.

ESI Corporation Medical College, Paripally which was planning to start its academic year by opening admissions for 100 MBBS seats based on the state government's proposal has lost a case. The Government Medical College, Idukki following with not being granted permission to admit its third batch of 50 students. However, the MCI permission to Government Medical College, Idukki introduces 100 seats with the fourth year batch and another 100 seats with the third batch will be introduced with the Government Medical College, Palakkad initiating its admission term.

At the same time, the apex educational body has further increased the intake of students from 200 to 250 to the new MBBS admissions in 2016-17 at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, and from 100 to 150 at the TD Government Medical College, Alappuzha.

The government earlier this month, had taken a sudden decision to request MCI's permission to start the ESIC Medical College at Parippally so that 100 government MBBS seats could be made available this academic year.

In an effort to again acceptance the government had quickly fulfilled all the necessary infrastructural requirements needed for starting the first year and had transferred faculty posts from Konni and the proposed new medical college at the capital to make up for faculty shortage.

Interestingly, the government had earlier on taken a policy decision against launching the new medical college at Thiruvananthapuram on the General Hospital campus with 100 MBBS seats

The private self-financing medical colleges, to whom the MCI has denied permission to for initiating fresh MBBS admissions this academic year (2016-17) are:

P.K. Das Institute of Medical Sciences (3rd batch,150 seats); Al Azhar Medical College and Super-Specialty Hospital (3rd batch, 150 seats); Mount Zion Medical College, Pathanamthitta (3rd batch, 100 seats); and D.M. Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (4th batch, 150 seats). The MCI has approved the application of the Believers' Church Trust, Kuttapuzha, Thiruvalla, to open a new private self-financing medical college at Kuttapuzha.
