Kerala: Kerala to start three new medical colleges next year

Kochi: Applications have been submitted by three more medical colleges to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare seeking its consent to start an MBBS course from the next year.


The colleges that have submitted their application are: Government Medical College, Konni, Government Medical College, Pariapally, Kollam, and Palakkad Institution of Medical Science, Palakkad.


While the two Government Medical Colleges have sought the ministry's approval for 150 seats each, the Palakkad Medical College, established by a Theni based VN Public Health and educational Trust) is seeking a nod on 100 seats.


The Health Ministry list of colleges seeking MBBS course approvals includes six medical colleges. The names of these medical colleges in Kerala on this list include- Govt Medical College, Konni, Palakkad Institution of Medical Science, Palakkad, Kerala Medical College, Govt Medical College Parippally, Kollam, KMCT Medical College and SR Medical College and Research Centre.


Three of this list of Medical Colleges in Kerala- Kerala MC, SR Medical College and KMCT already have the Lodha Committee approval for the current year for MBBS courses. An increased intake of 50 seats for the present year have been granted to KMCT one of the course approved colleges for the year 2016.


The Government Medical College, Idukki which had conducted admissions for the 2015-16 academic year was refused approval for the present one. According to sources, the college hasn't applied for permission for the year 2017.


Priyadarshini Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram is also missing in the list. The college though having the MCI permission had the kerala government expressing reluctance due to poor infrastructural facilities. The college has an approval for 100 seats.
