Kerala: Pariyaram Medical College PG students threaten strike over de-recognition of PG courses
Kerala: A recent development at the Pariyaram medical college here has brought the post-graduate students (of the college) on the edge. They have clearly expressed their anguish over the matter of de-recognition of 15 PG courses offered at the institute-by MCI.
Holding the college responsible for this development, students are the unhappy lot left without a massive choice of 15 PG courses, only expected to be offered at the college this academic session. The courses were reportedly started in 2011-12.
The college's PG Association has expressed the agitation of the students, alleging that the college management has failed to provide adequate infrastructural facilities to meet the MCI criteria. Following the lapse in attention by the management, the students have threatened to go on a strike. Others reasons cited for refusal by MCI, after their inspection visit in July include shortage of faculty, and training facilities.
As reported by Hindu, the college’s PG Graduates’ Association president, Shafi P.K., said that only two non-clinical courses, namely community medicine and physiology, out of the total 17 PG courses started in the PMC in 2011-12, were granted MCI recognition. Mr. Shafi further said that as per the MCI stipulation, the entire infrastructure should have been ready for inspection by the time of the examination of the first batch. The management had not complied with the stipulations when the MCI team visited in July last year, he said adding that inadequate infrastructure, faculty and training facilities were the reasons cited by the MCI for not granting the recognition. Association office-bearers said that they had sought the help of teachers and the parent-teacher association. The management had expelled the students who refused to pay their fees in protest against its laxity in securing the recognition, they said.
"At this stage, we have decided to take the legal course and call an agitation to make the authorities take immediate step to secure the MCI recognition. The issue has put us in a spot as we would not be able to register with Travancore-Cochin Medical Council (TCMC) or apply for faculty position in government medical colleges," said Shafi, as reported by TOI in addition.
