Kerala: Parippally Medical College gets seat approval of 100 seats by OC

Thiruvanathapuram: The medical college at Parippally has been granted the MBBS course approval with a 100 seats for the coming academic year by the Supreme Court appointed panel . However, the permission to increase seats comes with a rider that if the issues pointed out by the MCI are not addressed within 15 days of notification recognition of the college will be at stake.


The MCI had disallowed the college from enrolling students die to faculty and infrastructural deficiencies.


A written undertaking that all deficiencies will be met with within stipulated time will have to be submitted to the MCI.


"The government has received the committee's approval to admit students against the 100 MBBS seats for 2017-18. But it has to address the issues pointed out by the MCI within 15 days of the notification,'' said N K Premachandran, Kollam MP, who had approached the committee, headed by Justice R M Lodha, expressing dissatisfaction over the MCI’s rejection.


The MCI team that had visited the college for an inspection during the UDF tenure disallowed seat additions due to faculty shortage. The ensuing LDF government in an attempt to gain a favourable impression with the MCI transferred Thiruvananthapuram doctors, assuring the education regulator that facilities would be bettered, within an year’s time. However, the Council declined favourable view of the situation.

It was then that Kollam MP approached the Lodha Committee with a review petition to enrol students from this year.


"If the government does not rectify the deficiencies we will lose the seats in the next year," Premachandran told TOI.
