Improper clinical training facilities for the 2nd year MBBS students had also led the dept to to take the student and faculty shift decision. 20 faculty and 40 of the 50 Ist and 2nd year students were shifted.

As part of the faculty transfers, College Principal Dr P P Mohanan was made to join made to join Kottayam Medical College as Professor, General Medicine. His subordinates were shifted to shifted to the Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Manjeri Government Medical Colleges. The shift however, did not result in closure and the college was firm about bouncing back for the admissions for 2017-18.

However, despite plans to bounce back Idukki continues to suffer from infra structural deficiencies and staff shortages. It is believed that there is a serious shortage of teaching staff and theaters, speciality wings, wards, labs and other facilities at Idukki Medical College.
