Kerala government seeks MCI permission for ESI medical college Paripally

Kerala government is reported to have sought permission from MCI to begin MBBS course at ESI medical college Paripally, starting 2016-17. The state government has stated in its written communication to MCI that it is prepared to make available all facilities required to start the MBBS course at the medical college. The state government is seeking a nod to offer 100 MBBS seats in the beginning.

The basic infrastructure facilities have been set by the ESI Corporation, at an estimated project cost of Rs 540 crore. Till now, Rs 218 crore has to be spent. The medical college hospital will initially have a bed capacity of 300 beds and will later be increased to 500 beds.

Health minister K K Shylaja confirmed the news and implied that the state government will make available the facilities if it received the MCI approval for 100 MBBS seats for the new medical college.

Another decision to appoint 108 faculty members has also been taken by the state government now. Even though the decision was thought over earlier, there was no government order issued for the same. However, now these 108 posts have been officially created for this medical college. There are many orders still pending for verification regarding the takeover of the medical college hospital. There are some doctors who have been given appointment by ESI. They are now given an option to join the state government services.

"Till July 23 we have time to make the facilities ready. Almost 80% of the infrastructural works are complete. The remaining works will be completed on war footing," said the minister while speaking to reporters here. Facilities like library, equipment for the hospital and teaching, proper water supply, hostel facilities for students, etc have to be completed now, said the minister.

The government decided to seek MCI’s nod for MBBS admissions this year at Paripally as the institution had a full-fledged academic block and infrastructure needed for starting first year classes, as reported by Hindu. About 80 per cent of the infrastructural requirements were already there at the 300-bed hospital. The remaining requirements could be readied before July 23, the last date for the government to give its readiness to the MCI for starting the college.
