Kerala: Government Medical College Ernakulam is soon going to study the feasibility of bringing back the catheterisation laboratory (Cathlab) at its premise. This recent order to the college has been given by the government.

The Cathlab was initially procured for the college, however, was installed at co-operative hospital in Punappra, Alappuzha district. This hospital in Punappra called the Sagara Hospital was considered as a satellite hospital for the medical college, barely located at a distance of 80 km. Only high-level authorities has initially ordered to shift the the hi-tech diagnostic equipment there.

The issue was been highlighted by the State Human Rights Commission, which in an order, asked the government to consider having a Cathlab back at the medical college premise. It is of the view that currently it is not being utilized to its capacity.

Alternative option of setting up a new Cathlab is too high a cost-considering it can only be established at a cost of over Rs 4 crore. Shifting the lab is more financially feasible as it would be at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh.

College Principal Ashwini Kumar told The Hindu that based on the government order, a team, including himself and a cardiologist, would visit Sagara Hospital in Punappra functioning under the Ministry of Co-operation, and hold discussions with the authorities there on the issue.

“We need to find out what the hospital authorities and company officials have to say and the cost involved in shifting the equipment”, the Principal said.

A report would be sent to the Director, Medical Education, after the team visits Sagara Hospital.

In addition, the medical college will soon have an inhouse cardiology department, which will be set up at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
